Summary
This is a new reading of the thrilling account of one of the most astonishing feats of exploration and human courage ever recorded.

In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October, 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world.

Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean in the world and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains. The book recounts a harrowing adventure, but ultimately it is the nobility of these men and their indefatigable will that shines through.

A thrilling story that kept me listening non-stop for hours. Masterfully narrated, it was hard to listen through all the hardship. But the spirit of these men, Shackleton’s leadership and downright bravado, really keep you on the edge of your seat.

After recently going on a trip to Cape Horn and watching a documentary about Shackleton on the boat I wanted to know more. This was a very good book and only took me 3 days to get through. You keep wondering how they could survive after all they went though, but somehow they pulled it off. The will to live and look after one another is amazing. Simon Prebble narration was outstanding and the voices he had for the characters added the overall satisfaction of the book. Good read.

Excellent! Steven Spielberg should make it into a movie! Shackleton may not have accomplished the original voyage but his leadership and determination to save his men is absolutely remarkable for all time.
