Summary
Voted America's Best-Loved Novel in PBS's The Great American Read

Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork of honor and injustice in the deep South—and the heroism of one man in the face of blind and violent hatred

One of the most cherished stories of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird has been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than forty million copies worldwide, served as the basis for an enormously popular motion picture, and was voted one of the best novels of the twentieth century by librarians across the country. A gripping, heart-wrenching, and wholly remarkable tale of coming-of-age in a South poisoned by virulent prejudice, it views a world of great beauty and savage inequities through the eyes of a young girl, as her father—a crusading local lawyer—risks everything to defend a black man unjustly accused of a terrible crime.

This classic describes coming of age in the Deep South amidst serious life events, the awareness raised by being the children of Atticus, a local attorney. Both children became aware of the damage done by severe racial prejudice and joined their father in the courageous but tragic counter cultural activities, raising awareness of the pain and suffering of African Americans, and the bravery required to be a minority in the Deep South. Loved this book and have listened several times.

Excellent book. I was on the edge of my seat, so I actually sped up the narrator's voice. This is an American classic that should never be taken off the shelves no matter what your view is, because we cannot erase history. How will we ever learn if we don't learn from our mistakes. This was truly an amazing book. The narrator for this audiobook was the best I've ever heard yet!

I love the language and descriptions in this book. It really makes you think about the time period. The message was deep and too true. I found myself contemplating the human heart long after finishing this book. The narrator was great. She spoke so smoothly that it was easy to get lost in the story.

One of my favorite books. If you were assigned this book in school and dreaded it, I implore you to try reading it again, if not listen to this recording. It reminds me why Atticus Finch is one of literature's most beloved characters. I honestly fell in love all over again. The writing is smart, lush, and vivid. Touching, witty, and heartbreaking. Pair this with Sissy Spacek's wonderful performance, and you've got a masterpiece. Without making goofy cartoon voices, Sissy differentiates all of the characters using simple changes in pitch and delivery. When you're listening, you almost forget it's just one woman speaking. The recording is 12 hours long, but I found it went by extremely fast. Thoroughly enjoyable. I think I may make this a yearly listen so I can enjoy it again.

Phenomenal. Sissy Spacek gives a genuine and just voice to Scout. I hadn’t read this since I was relatively young. A novel with a strong sense of time and place that somehow manages to be timeless. Brilliant.

One of the best books ever written. I had forgotten what a great book it is. Engaging, engrossing, emotive, (I cried three times and I never cry), outstanding use of language. And there can be no better narrator than Sissy Spacek (so?). Great southern accent and use of voices for each character. You will glad you revisited this old friend.

Audiobooks has been the saving grace to help my daughter through school. Being a teacher I won't let her use cliff notes style books. Instead she reads the boom WITH thw audio. it has helped develop her understanding of the story and comprehension.

The theme of the book is as timely today as it was when it was first published. Prejudice will always be with us but there is hope for humanity. May we be encouraged to live our lives with courage and conviction. The narration was excellent.

I think that this book is amazing! And it's so interesting. And the narrator makes it come alive so much more. Reading without listening to the audio book doesn't make it click. So having this book so well spoken is awesome for me.

I remember this being required reading back in grade school. Nothing like the exquisite narrative that Sissy Spacek does in her MASTERFUL narration that bring ;Jean Louise Finch (Scout) , Jeremy Atticus Finch (Jem) , Atticus Finch. Calpurnia., Charles Baker Harris (Dill), Arthur Radley (Boo) , Tom Robinson, and Mayella Ewell to life with this timeless classic. A MUST!

I'm an 8th grader and we got assigned to read this book. It was so cool that they had a southern accent reading the book because it felt like she knew the story and it really brought you more into the book. This book was amazing and I wasn't expecting it to be this good. This is my new favorite book!

I am getting to know southern Mississippi and just spent two months there. The language and issues of the book are still pertinent, the prejudice isn't as overt but is engrained in Southern culture and the attitudes of the white population towards the blacks. It really was dangerous for blacks to cross whites, and it still isn't a fair world for the non-white population. Sissy Spacek is gifted as an interpreter of Scout's world, but the writing is amazing, rich and beautiful, even when the story is ugly, it is real. I will have to read Lee Harper's new release. I didn't find the story slow, but then, the South is slow, and I am not accustomed to the speed of television!

Sissy Spacek did an amazing job narrating. Gave me a greater appreciation for the book!

Profile Avatar

Not at all what I was expecting. I thought it was a courtroom drama. I think it would have been a rather boring read, but Sissy Spacek really brought it to life.

Since we m ow this book is amazing, I will just comment on the narrator of the audio. She was good and easy to listen too for hours on end.

Profile Avatar

Kinda boring I mean it gets interesting at the end of the book but the beginning is so bad....

Profile Avatar
Christa Blevins

I love the narrator reading. She does great! I just find the book a little offensive. If you are sensitive to the "N" word then I would not recommend this book. But remember it's setting is when stuff like that was an okay word to say. But it is a good and interesting book.

I suppose this book appealed to the masses in 1960, the controversial subject matter. However I found the ignorance and naiveness of some of the characters amusing. I still had a very difficult time getting through the book I found it to be boring and slow for today's reading. Sissy Spacek did a great job bringing out that simple southern charm.
